Meet the Team

Shane Hodkinson

Shane Hodkinson

Director

Shane has over 20 years of experience working in earthworks and geotechnical engineering roles, including project management, geotechnical engineering, and most recently serving as a Technical Manager for some of the UK's leading earthworks contractors.

He has extensive expertise in managing earthworks testing and quality assurance on major projects, including schemes involving over 5.5 million m³ of cut and fill. Shane specialises in supporting contractors and clients during the pre-construction phase, providing practical geotechnical input that helps identify risks early and ensures earthworks strategies are technically and commercially viable.

His experience includes reviewing site investigation data, assessing the suitability of excavated materials for reuse as engineered fill, and advising on moisture conditioning requirements to achieve Optimum Moisture Content (OMC). Shane also provides contractors with practical guidance on rates, modification requirements and testing costs, helping ensure appropriate allowances are made during tender and planning stages.

Shane is available to provide independent consultancy across all aspects of earthworks testing and verification, including trial embankment support, ground stabilisation advice, and technical input from tender stage through to project completion, helping ensure earthworks schemes are delivered efficiently and with confidence.

George Broughton

George Broughton

Director

George has over a decade of experience working as a Geotechnical Engineer for some of the UK's largest earthworks contractors, developing extensive expertise in both site investigation and earthworks quality assurance.

During this time, George specialised in ground investigations targeted specifically at earthworks projects. Using Ground Strata Solutions' borehole equipment, he undertakes detailed site investigations to establish a comprehensive moisture profile of materials across a site, helping contractors understand material behaviour and identify potential risks early in the project.

George has significant experience managing earthworks testing on live construction sites, analysing field data and reacting quickly to ensure specifications are met. He works closely with the overseeing project engineer to review earthworks specifications and develop Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), alongside producing layer plans, testing trackers and site testing schedules to ensure quality assurance requirements are maintained throughout the project.

Prior to project commencement, George prepares a detailed Earthworks Strategy Document outlining the methodology for the scheme and ensuring all testing and compliance procedures are clearly defined. He also produces a range of supporting technical drawings, including cut and fill drawings, testing grids, build-up plans and finished level drawings.

George supports contractors from the pre-construction stage through to project completion, ensuring all systems and procedures are in place to deliver a robust QA service. This includes supporting testing during construction and producing a comprehensive completion report at the end of the scheme to demonstrate that the earthworks specification has been fully achieved.

Collectively, our directors bring over 30 years of experience in earthworks and geotechnical engineering, having worked directly within major UK earthworks contracting organisations. This practical background means we understand projects from an earthworks contractor's perspective, not purely from a theoretical or consultancy standpoint.

Our approach focuses on practical, construction-led solutions, helping clients manage ground risk, plan earthworks strategies effectively, and ensure that testing, compliance and quality assurance processes work efficiently on site.
